Getting started with stand-up paddling is easier than you might think. Follow a few basic rules and you'll be balancing comfortably — and enjoying yourself — on day one.
Carry your board the right way
Dragging your board along the ground scratches and wears out the underside. Carry it by the center handle, with the wind at your side. On windy days keep the board horizontal, not upright, so it doesn't catch the wind and fly off.
Start on your knees
Don't try to stand up on your first attempt. In shallow water, kneel in the middle of the board with your knees on either side of the carry handle. Take a few strokes and get a feel for the balance before you move on to standing.
Stand up slowly
Rest your paddle across the front of the board like a horizontal support, then bring one foot forward, then the other, to where the handle is. Don't rush — and keep your eyes on the horizon, not the board. Looking down throws off your balance.
The ideal stance
Feet shoulder-width apart, parallel, on either side of the handle. Keep a soft bend in your knees (never lock them), back straight, balancing from your hips. Aim for a relaxed stance that moves with the water, not a rigid statue. If you lose your balance, don't panic — lay the paddle flat on the water and use it for support.
Efficient Paddle Stroke Mechanics
Power comes from your core, not your arms — tire less and travel further.
