SUP is a peaceful sport, but the water always demands respect. A few golden rules will let you enjoy it safely.
Read the conditions first
Before every session, check the wind speed, wave conditions, water temperature and forecast. That's exactly why SUPspot's weather and SUP score exist. If the wind is stronger than expected, postpone your plan.
Beware of offshore wind
Wind blowing from land out to sea (offshore) can sweep you away from shore fast, and getting back can be very hard. When in doubt, stay parallel to the shore and close to it.
Get off the water when the weather turns
Don't waste time when fog, storms or lightning threaten. On open water, standing on your board makes you the highest point around — at any risk of lightning, get out of the water immediately.
Don't forget boat traffic
Large and motorized vessels always have right of way. Be ready for their wake, keep clear of shipping lanes, and wear visible colors.
Don't paddle alone
Avoid going out alone whenever possible. If you do go solo, tell someone where you're going and for how long — that's exactly what SUPspot's "I'm on the water" feature is for: share your live location with someone you trust.
