You've learned to go straight; now it's time to turn the board wherever you want. Three basic turns will cover you in any situation.
The sweep stroke
The simplest turn: sweep the paddle in a wide arc from the nose of the board toward the tail. Sweep on the left side to turn right, on the right side to turn left. Slow but stable.
The cross-bow turn
For a faster change of direction, rotate your torso, cross the paddle over the nose of the board and pull the water on the opposite side. You get a sharp turn without losing your center.
The pivot (tail) turn
Advanced and very fast: take a step or two back toward the tail to lift the nose out of the water, and spin the board around itself. It takes balance — try it in shallow water first.
Brace through every turn
While turning, hold the paddle flat on the water's surface and press down lightly (a brace). It gives you a third point of balance and keeps you from falling mid-turn.
