If you've mastered standing still on the board, the next step is moving with control. This skill unlocks turns, surfing and advanced techniques.
Start by shuffling your feet
First, slide your feet slightly forward and back without lifting them off the board (a shuffle). It's the safest way to learn shifting your center of gravity without falling.
Feel the board beneath you
The secret to balance: imagine you're moving the board under your feet, not moving your feet themselves. Keep your gaze on the horizon and your knees soft. Balance comes from being relaxed, not tense.
Moving to a surf stance
As you progress, shift to a surf stance — one foot forward, one back, slightly angled. This stance gives you far more control in turning maneuvers and when catching waves.
Practice tip
Practice on calm, flat water. Try it first somewhere shallow and warm; even if you fall, you'll climb right back on. Spend a few minutes on it each session and your balance muscles will develop fast.
