Two pieces of SUP gear are non-negotiable: a personal flotation device (PFD) and a leash. Choosing the right type can save your life.
Why a leash is essential
The leash keeps your board attached to you. When you fall, the wind can carry your board away in seconds — with a leash, your biggest flotation device is always within reach.
The right leash for the right water
Calm/flat water: a coiled ankle leash is ideal — it doesn't drag in the water. Rivers / whitewater: NEVER use a fixed ankle leash — if it snags on an obstacle below the surface, it's dangerous. Use only a waist-mounted quick-release leash you can detach instantly.
The PFD
On flat water, inflatable belt-pack PFDs are handy and give you freedom of movement. On the open sea, in waves or in moving water, choose an inherently buoyant (foam) vest — it keeps you at the surface even if you're dazed.
Remember
No matter how good your gear is, it's best-effort. Never underestimate the conditions — in an emergency, call your local emergency number.
