The biggest decision before buying a SUP: inflatable or hard? Both have their strengths.
Inflatable (iSUP)
Deflated, it fits in a backpack — a miracle for small apartments, travel and public transport. Usually more affordable, and surprisingly durable. More than enough for most paddlers.
Hard boards (epoxy/fiberglass)
They cut through the water better, so they're noticeably faster and more responsive. The choice for performance, racing and wave surfing. But they need storage and transport space, and they're more sensitive to knocks.
Foam beginner boards
Soft-top foam boards are extremely impact-resistant, don't absorb water and offer high weight capacity. A safe, budget-friendly entry option for families, kids and anyone paddling with their dog.
The verdict
Short on space or traveling a lot → iSUP. Chasing performance and speed, with room to store it → hard board. First board and not sure → an iSUP is usually the smartest way to start.
