The right board can make the difference between falling in love with the sport and giving it up. Choose based on your level and what you want to do.
All-around boards
The best choice for beginners. Wide and high-volume, they offer great stability and perform well on both flat water and small waves. Your first board should probably be one of these.
Touring models
For those who love long distances and straight lines. A pointed nose cuts through the water for excellent glide and speed. You trade a little stability for a lot of efficiency.
Volume and weight capacity
The most critical point: the board's volume in liters must comfortably carry your weight (plus any extra load). A board with too little volume sinks and feels unstable. Check the manufacturer's maximum weight rating.
Width = stability
A wide board (around 81 cm / 32" and up) is more stable; a narrow board is faster but harder to ride. If you're just starting out, go wide — you can move to narrower boards as your balance improves.
