The paddle is the link between your engine and the water. The wrong paddle wears you out; the right one gives you hours of joy.
The right length
Rule of thumb: your paddle should be about 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) taller than you. If more than one person will use it, definitely get an adjustable model.
Blade width
A wide blade grabs more water and delivers maximum power, but tires your body quickly — good for short, powerful bursts. A narrow blade puts less strain on your joints and is the pick for longer distances.
Material matters
Aluminum: durable and affordable, but heavy — fine for getting started. Fiberglass: a good balance of weight and price. Carbon fiber: the lightest and most efficient, seriously reducing fatigue on long tours — but pricey.
Small but important: your grip
Your top hand wraps over the T-grip; your bottom hand holds the shaft. The blade angle (offset) should face forward — a blade mounted the wrong way kills your efficiency.
